Super Doctors

As the director of neurology at Cook Children's, Dr. Kelfer has seen dramatic growth of this specialty practice since its inception in 1994 as a small private practice. He has been a guiding force in its ability to serve thousands of patients. His nationally recognized team is an admittedly cohesive one which has grown in visibility and ability to change lives.

Dr. Kelfer's initial vision for his career was much different than what it is today. "Growing up in New England, I knew early in life that I would go into pediatric medicine, but I thought I’d make house calls on cross country skis," he says. And though there isn't much need for cross country skis in Ft. Worth, he has found his calling caring for patients here at Cook Children's.

Dr. Kelfer believes that good patient treatment depends upon taking your time. "In neurology you have to solve a mystery that is both physical and mental. You have to take time with each patient. I am the person who can sit back, listen, connect and let the patient process evolve by taking your time," says Dr. Kelfer.

He has held virtually every position within Cook Children's and served on every committee. These are facts that he mentions with modesty and gratitude. His personal interests, not surprisingly, involve the pursuit of learning.

What Should I Do if I'm Alone with a Child Who Has a Seizure?
Don’t panic! If you see your child (or any child) convulsing, take a deep breath. It’s more important that you remain calm.
