Since 1987, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores from across the country have helped raise more than $530 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. And in 2011, local Walmart and Sam’s Club stores joined together to raise more than $456,000 to help fund the new Hematology and Oncology Pharmacy at Cook Children’s.
For Chuck Sparks, Sam’s Club manager in Lewisville, Texas, fundraising for Cook Children’s is very personal. “My family’s relationship with Cook Children’s dates back to 2001, when our pediatrician in Abilene referred us to Cook Children’s after our baby daughter had a status seizure requiring hospitalization.” Sparks daughter was diagnosed with a rare syndrome in 2008 and continues to need the care of Cook Children’s in 2012.
Sparks’ family feels so strongly about Cook Children’s that his wife proudly serves on the Family Advisory Council, an organization dedicated to enhancing the hospital experience of the child as well as the whole family. “It has been so exciting to see the money raised by the Walmart/Sam’s Club family last year help fund the new Hematology and Oncology Pharmacy. Cook Children’s brings the best facilities, staff and research together to give our children hope for a healthy future. Our family strives for excellence in all they do . . . I am proud to say, so does the Cook Children’s family.” When asked why he thinks others should also give in support of Cook Children’s Sparks replied, “There is [still] so much work to be done. The kids need our commitment to care.”
With the help of leaders such as Chuck Sparks, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores continue to be instrumental in supporting the local work of Cook Children’s as well as that of many other hospitals nationwide through their partnership with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
