Neurosciences programs
Distinctive services and programs within the Neuroscience Center at Cook Children's include:
Chronic pain, headaches, insomnia, anxiety and other stress related problems can interfere with a child's school performance, and/or social and family life. Biofeedback can give your child a drug-free, non-invasive way to improve his or her own health and performance. |
Child Life specialists work with children, youth and families to help them cope with the extra challenges of living with chronic illness. |
Cook Children's is the first independent pediatric hospital in the United States, and the only children's hospital in Texas, to offer a comprehensive movement disorder program that includes deep brain stimulation (DBS). |
Cook Children's Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is one of the leading pediatric epilepsy programs in the country. We are a dedicated Level 4 pediatric epilepsy center, the highest level defined by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, and are capable of performing the most complex epilepsy related surgeries. |
Our state-of-the-art Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is an important part of the evaluation and integrated care of the child with epilepsy and recurrent unprovoked spells. |
It is important for parents and caregivers to be aware of the specific symptoms of their child's headache. If the headache seems out of the ordinary, involves a high level of pain, or occurs frequently, seek the advise of a doctor. |
MEG is a highly sensitive way to record the magnetic fields generated by the brain. This safe test helps localize where seizures occur, as well as important functions like language and motor skills. |
The Neurodiagnostic Center is an important part of our neurosciences program. A variety of neurological tests are available to help our neurologists diagnose the patient's condition. |
Our goal is to improve the quality of life for our pediatric patients by giving them a balance between medicine and therapy. Some of our therapy options are interventional pain procedures, medical acupuncture, relaxation therapy, guided imagery, biofeedback, hypnosis and cognitive behavioral therapy. We also teach our patients and families how to manage pain through exercise, diet, behavioral therapy and biofeedback. |
The Rehab Care Unit (RCU) is a family-centered area where children get treatment for head injuries and neurological illnesses. The RCU uses multiple people that provide services including therapies, medical care, support and education. |
