Life After Cancer
The Life After Cancer program at Cook Children's works to benefit children, adolescents and young adults by providing medical care and other services for childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.
The survivorship program was the first of its kind funded by the Livestrong Foundation and serves as a model for other survivorship programs. Services provided through the Life After Cancer program include:
- Thorough medical and psychosocial assessments
- Ongoing evaluation and coordination of care
- Combined survivorship and Endocrinology clinic
- Counseling services by a licensed clinical social worker
- Consultations in survivorship including the following specialties: Cardiology, Nephrology, Pulmonology and more.
- Working with adult cancer centers and young adult survivor groups
- Neuropsychological testing
- Guidance for the survivor while transistioning from pediatric to adult services
- Social work services
- Educational, financial and vocational counseling
- Connecting with services to assist with transitions from school to higher education or vocational program
- Initiatives include research to improve the health of survivors and transition to survivorship for both families and survivors.
- Life After Cancer organizes an annual retreat for school-age survivors and their families (Camp O' Hana)
- C-YA (Celebrating Young Adults) is an annual retreat for young adults exclusively
The Celebrating Young Adults group is both for young adults with cancer and those who have survived. We work closely with our new Adolescent and Young Adult community programa to try and meet the needs of our young adults undergoing cancer treatment.
Events
Quarterly education workshops are available for young adults covering many topics like financial health, educational health, careers, and emotional and medical health. Call for more information 682-885-2125.
We meet monthly and our events include education programs, opportunities to learn more about resources available for survivors and to network with other survivors through social activities like family picnics, parties and sporting events.
