The three Cook Children's Orthopedic Services physicians who specialize in spinal surgeries are Medical Director, David Gray, M.D., Ronald Burke, M.D., and Christopher Vara, M.D. Each of these surgeons completed additional pediatric training in orthopedic and spinal surgery. With more than 30 combined years in pediatric orthopedics, our surgeons have extensive experience in treating the unique needs of children with spinal conditions.
The Medical Director of Orthopedics is David Gray, M.D., a member of one of the world's premier spine organizations, the Scoliosis Research Society.
Deborah Graham LCPO, is the director for the Cook Children's Home Health orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) department. She and her team of orthotists specialize in taking care of children. They understand the body mechanics of children so they can properly fit your child with the appropriate bracing. You may meet with the orthotics and prosthetics department at our Home Health location, or during your exam with the orthopedic surgeon in the Specialty Clinics building.
Patient services range from assessments and examinations, such as X-rays and regular monitoring, custom spine braces, to spinal surgery, if necessary.
Patient care is provided as a collaborative effort between the orthopedic surgeons, our award winning medical center nursing staff, orthotisists, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, as well as any other required expertise from our other specialties like neurosurgery, cardiology, pulmonology, pain management and general surgery.
Choosing a Cook Children's orthopedic surgeon for your child's spine care gives you access to an integrated health care system. The program offers unique services such as Child Life specialists to help your child understand the stages of surgery. Additionally, financial counselors are available to help you understand your insurance benefits and find other programs if necessary, like Medicaid and CHIP.
Appointments can be made by calling our main number 682-885-4405. Our receptionists can help you schedule an appointment with one of the orthopedic spine specialists at any of four office locations: main campus, Hurst, Southlake, and Southwest Fort Worth.
Parent involvement helps the patient understand activity restrictions, recommended exercises and other treatment plan instructions. That's why it's important that at least one parent accompany a spine patient to all of their appointments.
In addition, all new patients should make every effort to bring copies of their images for previously taken radiographs, MRI or CT scans. The images will be reviewed by the physician and possibly compared to new radiographs taken during the office visit
This group offers support and events for patients and family members. The events introduce patient families to one another and to learn from each other’s experiences. The group meets in the Family Support Meeting Center, located at the back of Camelot Court on the first level of the medical center. The 2013 events have been scheduled for:
