Welcome to the Cook Children’s Distance Learning Site!
We are committed to providing up-to-date health care information via video conferencing to schools and organizations in our communities, in North Texas, and across the country. Please review the video conference programs and scheduling information below.
A Visit to the Emergency Room Audience-Students
Follow three children as they come to the Emergency department for different reasons. See what happens as they arrive by car, by ambulance, and even by helicopter.
Students will see the children experience procedures such as having x-rays and receiving stitches. Students will get to ask questions to help them better understand what might happen if they ever need to visit the Emergency department. Cost-$95. Offered twice a month.
Luke Visits the Operating Room Audience: Students
When you’re a child, having surgery can be scary. This program helps students understand what happens when they or someone they know has surgery.
Students follow Luke throughout the process: checking in at the hospital with his parents, preparing for surgery, looking at the equipment in the operating room and resting in the recovery room. The program does not show an actual operation, but students have the opportunity to see everything as if they are really there.
We will send classroom materials to your group ahead of time, and the presenter will provide ample time for interactive questions. Cost $95. Offered twice a month.
Minor Emergencies in the School Setting Audience: School Nurses
School nurses don't just take temperatures. They are one of the first responders for a child having a seizure or experiencing a sport or playground injury. This 1.5-hour program is designed to give school nurses the skills necessary to appropriately provide first aid in both situations.
In part one of the program, Jamie Bankston, RN, BSN, Neurology educator, demonstrates how to recognize various signs and symptoms of seizure activity, describes the steps of seizure first aid, and explains the use and administration of Diastat as a rescue medication for prolonged seizure activity.
In part two, Cam Brandt, RN, MS, CPN, CEN, Emergency Services educator, identifies common sports injuries found in the school setting as well as stabilization materials and strategies. Participants should bring supplies from their clinics that could be used to stabilize common sports injuries.
Both of these presentations are interactive using video examples, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. Cook Children's offers this program at no charge on February 12, 2008, March 25, 2008, and May 6, 2008 from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Please go to www.connect2texas.net to register.
I Spy...Outdoor Safety (new!) Audience: Students
Do you like to play I Spy? This fun, interactive program will teach your students important outdoor safety tips as they play I Spy with pictures and video clips. They will learn how to have fun and stay safe while pursuing outdoor activities.
Health care professionals will discuss and demonstrate many important safety issues including bike safety, the correct way to wear helmets and other protective gear when riding wheeled equipment, the importance of seatbelts and booster seats, playground safety tips, water safety and the best type of personal flotation devices.
Students can ask questions and participate in fun quiz questions throughout the program. Cost-$95. Offered twice a month.
