Many doctors and scientists, including members of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), consider immunization to be among the 20th century's greatest triumphs. "It is by far the most successful and cost-effective public health tool for preventing disease, disability and death," said Mark M. Shelton, MD, pediatric infectious disease specialist at Cook Children's Medical Center.
In spite of scientific evidence proving immunizations safely protect against some of the most dreaded diseases known, there has been a dramatic increase in the visibility of organizations against the routine immunization of children. Talk with your doctor about your child's health, including the need for immunizations.
The AAP recommends that all children receive a series of immunizations starting at birth. Several vaccines must be given more than once at different ages to adequately protect your child. By the time children are 2 years old, they should have completed their basic series of immunizations. Children in Texas are required by law to be immunized before they can attend daycare or school.
