The Hematology and Oncology Center provides high-quality, family and patient-centered care to children and teenagers with cancer and blood disorders. We also provide access to leading-edge therapies and research.
Childhood cancer and certain blood disorders in children can be extremely rare. And even those that are found in adults require a very different approach when it comes to treating kids, teens, and young adults. Choosing a board-certified pediatric specialist for your child’s care ensures that your doctor has highly specialized training both in your child’s diagnosis and in treating that diagnosis specifically in children.
Cook Children's hematology program directs the care of children and adolescents with diseases of the blood including: sickle cell, hemophilia, stroke/thrombosis, bone marrow failure syndrome, anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia.
Cook Children's oncology program cares for kids with cancer, including some of the rarest forms. Our services include: leukemia/lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor, retinoblastoma, other tumors, orthopedic cancers.
Cook Children's Neuro-Oncology program blends the services of oncology and neurosciences to give children with central nervous system tumors access to an experienced team of doctors and other caregivers who work together using the latest technology and evidence-based medicine to improve their health.
Stem cell transplant
Cook Children's Stem Cell Transplant program performs transplants in children with cancer, blood disorders or inherited conditions.
Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA)
Our Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) program provides a focus of resources, interests and expertise around the needs of oncology patients diagnosed with cancer over the age of 15.
Life After Cancer Program
The Life After Cancer Program at Cook Children's works to benefit children, adolescents and young adults by providing medical care and other services for childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.
A new treatment for neuroblastoma
Beginning January, 2013, Cook Children's is opening the doors on a new era of treatment for neuroblastoma patients, the I-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG). MIBG is a targeted therapy that delivers radiation directly to cancer cells. Our MIBG facility is the only one in Texas and in the Southwest, which means families don't have to travel and stay away from home to receive this innovative treatment. Member of the Children's Oncology Group
The Children's Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute supported clinical trials group, is the world's largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The COG unites more than 8,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children's hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in the fight against childhood cancer.
The NANT consortium is a group of 15 universities and childrens hospitals with strong research and treatment programs for neuroblastoma. As a member site, we work closely together to test promising new therapies for high-risk and relapsed neuroblastoma. The majority of funding for NANT comes from the National Cancer Institute.
