Meet Dr. Corey Mandel
Dr. Corey Mandel, one of Cook Children's board-certified pediatric cardiologists, came to us from New York in 2003. He was born in Brooklyn and grew up on the South Shore of Long Island but he insists, "I got here as soon as I could. Even though I miss the beach, there are so many amazing things about being in Fort Worth. It's a great place to raise kids."
While in medical school, he realized that he wanted to dedicate his life to caring for children. "I genuinely enjoy being around kids. I take my work very seriously but that doesn't mean you can't also laugh a little (it is the best medicine, right?). They don't chose to be in the doctor's office so it's up to us to make the experience as pleasant as possible. I love to see the spark in their eyes, the excitement of every new adventure and their joy for life. When I see a child suffering, it hurts me deep inside. I see our future in them, I want to provide for them."
Although he cherished his work in general Pediatrics, the more time he spent learning about pediatric cardiology, the more he realized how much it interested him. It turns out, it was his destiny, "As a kid, I did several grade school projects relating to the heart. I didn't even remember them, I found them decades later in the back of a closet at my parent's house."
Dr. Mandel views the doctor-patient relationship as a very important point of emphasis. "Some things are pretty straightforward and can be addressed quickly but overall, I try to get as much information as possible in the beginning. If I don't know what the issues are than I can't help. I may ask lots of questions at the outset and I try to go over things completely and as clearly as possible but cardiology can be complicated and not everything has a simple explanation. At the same time, I'm happy for them to ask me many questions as well," says Dr. Mandel. "While that sometimes makes for a long visit (sorry if you have to wait a little bit but everyone gets a turn), it's much, much better for families to feel they understand what’s going on than to have them walk away worried or confused. I've found that family plays an important role in our area of medicine. Having them informed helps keep everyone involved on the path to wellness."
In addition to your family, Dr. Mandel is quite dedicated to his own wife and two children. They try to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, keeping involved in sports and outdoor activities when possible. Lately, he has tried to focus on skiing and scuba diving but finds that challenging in the middle of Texas.

Dr Mandel was phenomenal. My daughter is wanting to be in the WNBA when she grows up. He had her sign her EKG strip so when she's famous one day he can say he was her doctor. That made her AND I feel so special.

After our visit we were going to eat at the cafe, however, it is not yet open. There was a nurse on the bench at the entry way and we had mentioned our predicament. She asked if we knew where the cafeteria was, we did not, she preceded do get up and escort us all the way to the other building. We obviously got stuck at the beautiful Lego replica, however, he dedication to ensuring we made it there while talking with my children was beyond my expectations. We've spent a lot of time in Children's Hospitals and we agreed that this, by far, has been our favorite so far

We arrived at our first appointment prior to opening and as soon as staff arrived they got right to work. They were kind and professional. We were in our room for my son to have his first round of testing promptly and off to see the doctor. Our nurse was wonderful and so sweet while my autistic twins wanted to tell her all the things as I tried to answer her questions. She wouldn't take my apologies, just told me how wonderful my children were. Dr. Mandel was very reassuring in (Patient's) tests and listened to him and was so patient during his exam. We were an hour early to our next appointment and greeted with the same kindness at our check in. I was asked about being added to your records app and then when I came back to the desk to make sure I was adding the right app, she smiled and said, "Yes ma'am, sure are!"We chatted while we waited and didn't have to wait long. Our RN was so sweet and knowledgeable. During our time she felt like talking with a friend and made us very comfortable. She took notes on my questions and concerns and checked about a school note, which slipped my mind!

We love Cooks Children's Medical Center, and though we moved to Oklahoma City from DFW in 2008, we have continued to commute to Fort Worth ever since because we trust them and they have always provided the best quality of care for (Patient).

Dr. Mandel is a life changing physician who has handled my son's cardiac care since 2005. He is full of knowledge, care, compassion, patience, and many more jeweled characteristics. We are very blessed and thankful to have him.
