Meet Dr. Ryan Gates

Dr. Ryan Gates grew up in the San Antonio area and attended Texas State University, where he studied Biochemistry and Mathematics, before matriculating into medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Having recognized at an early age his passion for working with children, it was in medical school that he became fascinated by the field of medical genetics, its diversity of patient presentations, and rapid advancements in testing and therapeutics.

After medical school, Dr. Gates completed a combined residency in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics at Stanford Healthcare and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, California. During that time, he served as the Chief Resident for Medical Genetics and earned an Honors Certificate in Medical Education. Texas has always been home to Dr. Gates, so he was thrilled to join the team at Cook Children's Hospital in 2022. He finds joy in meeting patients and their families, helping end diagnostic odysseys, and teaching complex genetics concepts to families and students alike.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Gates enjoys spending time with his wife and young children, watching sports, and traveling.
