Meet Dr. Don P. Wilson
A pediatric endocrinologist by training, Dr. Don Wilson has devoted the past 20 years of his career to cardiovascular health and risk prevention in children and adolescents. Recognizing that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. and developed countries, Dr. Wilson developed three unique pediatric cardiovascular health and risk prevention programs as a member of the academic faculty of Texas A&M University, University of Arizona and Texas Christian University. Currently he serves as the endowed chair of the Pediatric Cardiovascular Health and Risk Prevention program at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. This program is designed to better understand the cause(s) of premature cardiovascular diseases and related health risks, including genetic and acquired forms of dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and "pre-diabetes".
Dr. Wilson is board certified by the American Boards of Pediatrics, Endocrinology and Lipidology, a fellow of the National Lipid Association and associate editor for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. He is currently a member the board of directors for the Southwest Lipid Association, the American Board of Clinical Lipidology and the National Lipid Association. In addition to being associate editor, Dr. Wilson is a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, and a reviewer for several other professional journals, including Atherosclerosis, Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatrics, Clinical Pediatrics, Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews and International Journal of Obesity. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, including many which focus on CVD risk burden, prevention and treatment in children with genetic and acquired disorders of lipid metabolism.
As an expert in the field of pediatric clinical lipidology, Dr. Wilson has been invited to give numerous oral presentations and written editorial comments for leading peer-reviewed lipid/lipoprotein and CVD related journals. He participated as a co-author for the National Lipid Association's (NLA) Recommendations for Patient-Centered Management of Dyslipidemia, Parts I and II, and recently shared the NLA's Lipoprotein (a) Scientific Statement Committee.
On a personal note, Dr. Wilson enjoys spending time with his wife, Andrea, their children and their families, including four grandchildren. He has a variety of personal interests, including history, cartooning, baking and traveling. His travels have included participating in medical missions to Mexico, China and Africa. In his spare time, Dr. Wilson plays the guitar, is learning to play the piano and writes poetry.
Favorite quote: "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see." - Mark Twain
I just want to say that Dr. Wilson was the kindest physician we have ever encountered. Dr. Wilson wasn't all business, he thought outside of the box and talked to my daughter about her personal interest. My daughter and I both have rare disorders, and many times when the physician doesn't know what is going on they dismiss us... but not at Cook Children's. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for listening and allowing us to feel truly cared for. – Patient family

The nurse was very thorough and asking for medical history and updating the files. The doctor had a wonderful bedside manner, very informative, and took time to explain everything in full detail. The dietitian was outstanding! She didn't make you feel like you were giving up everything just to have a healthier lifestyle. She broke it down into steps to make the changes easier.

Melissa, Dr. Wilson's nurse was a hero. The second she saw (Patient) was struggling she immediately got "the rover" and set it up. She even made a note in his chart to have it set up prior to his visit for next time. Dr. Wilson was an answered prayer. He is compassionate, forthright and realistic.
