Meet Dr. Vera Okwu

My desire to become a medical doctor started at ten years old and was heavily influenced by my older sister who is a medical doctor. That dream finally became a reality in 2009 when I graduated from Northwestern Medical School. I went on to complete my residency training in General Pediatrics in 2012 at the Cleveland Clinic. I subsequently completed my fellowship training in Pediatric Gastroenterology in 2015 at the Cleveland Clinic.

After completing my fellowship training, I moved to Texas in 2015. I have been in private practice since 2015. I have enjoyed caring for my patients and their families in Texas. I am excited to be joining the Pediatric Gastroenterology Division at Cook Children's Hospital.

As a Pediatric Gastroenterologist, I have had the pleasure of taking care of patients with various gastrointestinal conditions. I love that I get to provide excellent evidence-based care for my patients in a variety of settings. I have a strong interest in General Pediatric Gastrointestinal conditions including but not limited to Allergic/Autoimmune conditions, Hepatobiliary conditions, Malabsorptive conditions and Nutrition management.

In my spare time, I love to spend time with my husband and three children. My hobbies include reading non-fiction novels, watching movies, exercising and exploring different cuisines around the city.

    Dr. Okwu was so knowledgeable, and really listen and wanted to run more test just rule out any thing as unlike her medical background and feels she goes beyond to make sure a child is diagnose right so she and parents can make the right medical decision

    Dr.owku was amazing, she listened to all my concerns and made me feel that my thoughts/ opinions were valid. She never rushed me or rushed through treatment and plan for our son. The phlebotomist (I don't remember her name) was amazing and very engaged with our son and made the blood drawing process so easy. You can tell she really loved her job and the kids.
