Meet Dr. Gretchen Eames

As a child, Dr. Gretchen Eames never dreamed of growing up to become a doctor. In fact, it was not until her years at the University of Iowa that medicine, and especially pediatrics, became her passion. Then, while doing her residency and fellowship training at the University of Minnesota, as she worked side-by-side and trained under some of the very best pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant physicians in the country, Dr. Eames found her home!

"The highlight for me is getting to know the patients and being a part of their journey, especially the patients who have a poor prognosis for transplantation. Seeing those patients doing well several months or years later is so incredibly humbling and special."

Dr. Eames came to Cook Children's over 23 years ago because this program would allow her to spend a great deal of time actually caring for patients at the bedside—her greatest passion—but also because Cook Children's has always excelled at clinical research and collaborations with other institutions so that North Texas patients can receive the latest and greatest therapies closer to home. As a devoted wife and a mother of two successful young women, Dr. Eames knows how important being close to all your support can be during the challenging periods of life.

Under her leadership as medical director of Cook Children's Stem Cell Transplant program since 2001 and the Hematology and Oncology Center since 2006, Dr. Eames and her team have overseen incredible growth in Cook Children's hematology and oncology programs and leading edge research. But in the midst of all this continuing growth and change, one thing remains the same: they still focus on each and every patient completely and holistically, and Dr. Eames wouldn't have it any other way!

Dr. Eames's greatest passions outside of work are her family, gardening, Iowa Hawkeye football and of course, traveling to all parts of the world. "We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us."
