Meet Dr. Leah I. Elizondo

Dr. Elizondo took a distinctive path to becoming a neonatologist. After earning her undergraduate degree, she completed graduate studies focused on a rare childhood genetic disorder. Her research explored how the disease developed during fetal growth at the cellular level and its broader impact on body function. Although she found this work deeply compelling, she realized she missed the personal connection that comes with caring for patients and their families. That insight inspired her to pursue a medical degree, where she was able to blend her love of science with hands-on clinical care.

Drawn to early human development and a desire to help children thrive, Dr. Elizondo found her calling in neonatal medicine. She finds deep purpose in caring for all critically ill newborns but has a particular interest in neonates with congenital heart disease, and is a member of Cook Children's Hyperinsulinism Center team. Before joining Cook Children's in 2019, she cared for newborns and their families in both New York City and Houston, Texas. She considers it a privilege to support families through some of their most vulnerable moments and believes the experience is a shared journey.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Elizondo is married and the mother of two energetic sons who share her love for music, soccer and running. Together with her family, she enjoys an active lifestyle, participating in local races, exploring hiking trails and traveling. These experiences fuel her commitment to both her patients and loved ones, reinforcing her belief in the importance of balance, wellness and joy at every stage of life.
