Meet Dr. Anthony Toan Nguyen

Dr. Nguyen was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and earned his undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Oregon State University, where his interest in biomechanics and exercise physiology sparked a passion for the musculoskeletal system. During this time, he also had the opportunity to work with children with disabilities, helping them develop their motor skills. Seeing the joy these children experienced in class was profoundly rewarding and further inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. He went on to complete his medical degree at Des Moines University in 2017, followed by residency training at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Michigan, and then fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at Duke University and the University of North Carolina.

Dr. Nguyen discovered his passion for pediatric orthopedics while working as a medical scribe, where he saw how meaningful it is to help children recover and return to the activities they enjoy most. Having also been an orthopedic patient himself, he understands the challenges families face—an experience that helps him connect more personally with his patients. He treats fractures, sports injuries and a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, and believes the most important part of his work is providing thoughtful, family-centered care. As both a physician and a parent, he brings empathy, patience and understanding to every child he treats.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Nguyen enjoys spending time with his wife—whom he met in medical school—and their two young kids. Together, they love hiking, traveling, exploring new places and trying new foods. He also enjoys golfing, being outdoors and, above all, making his kids and wife laugh.
