Meet Dr. Matthew E. Mayfield

Growing up in a small town, one of my earliest memories was visiting my grandfather's mechanic shop. I would ride my bike the half mile there to see all the noises and machines that went along with car repair. I was fascinated by how he would work with his hands and the multiple tools that he would use. Occasionally, he would even let me do some of the simpler things. As I got older, there was always a car or a tractor that I could help him with. I didn't know at the time that those lessons would help me with my future career.

After graduating from high school where both of my parents worked (my father was a coach and teacher and my mother was the principal's secretary), I attended Texas A&M University. After A&M, I completed my medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

It was there that I first became interested in orthopedic surgery. Having worked with my hands all my life, I felt that surgery was a natural fit in the realm of medicine. Orthopedic surgery was especially interesting because of the tools and hardware that are involved.

I pursued an orthopedic surgery residency and completed my training at the University of Tennessee, Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. I further specialized in pediatric orthopedic surgery, completing a fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.

I love helping children and I feel that this is what I was meant to do.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my wife of 20 years and 3 kids. I enjoy coaching their youth sports teams and supporting all of their activities. I also like playing golf, cooking and fly fishing.
