Meet Dr. Makayla Penner

Dr. Penner's love for children began early on. Growing up she spent much of her time at her family's daycare, where she found joy helping out in the nursery, chasing toddlers on the playground, and making crafts with the older kids.

This experience shaped her deep appreciation for family and community and sparked a lifelong passion for caring for children. Over time, her interests in science and creativity naturally led her to the field of pediatrics — a specialty that beautifully brings together all the things she loves most.

Dr. Penner has always lived in Texas and feels fortunate to have been able to complete all of her training close to home. She earned her undergraduate degree at Dallas Baptist University, doctor of medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Baylor Scott and White McLane Children's Hospital. Along with her studies she enjoyed serving at schools and free clinics in her community. In her final year she was appointed as Chief Resident by her peers and program leaders which allowed her to further her leadership skills. She earned several awards during her training such as the Resident of the Year award, Nursery award, Advocacy award, PICU Lifesaver award and Hospital Medicine award. These experiences, along with her most meaningful role as a mother of three, have helped shape her into the compassionate and dedicated physician she is today.

One of Dr. Penner's favorite parts of pediatrics is building lasting relationships with families and having the privilege of watching children grow from birth through young adulthood. She cares for each child as she would her own and finds genuine joy in every interaction, big or small.

Outside of work, Dr. Penner enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and dog. She loves family walks, getting lost in a good book, traveling — especially on a Disney Cruise — and being involved in her church community.

She feels exceptionally grateful to be living out her dream caring for children and is honored to serve her community as a pediatrician for years to come.
