Meet our pediatricians
At Cook Children's, taking care of kids means including the whole family. We take the time to listen to you and your child, answer questions and help you navigate parenthood.
Our doctors are specialists in the health care of infants, children and adolescents. Our team includes board certified pediatricians that, together with you, will get your kids on the path to leading happy and healthy lives.
Sandra Peak, M.D.
While other little girls hosted tea parties, a young Sandra Peak, M.D, opened a "clinic" and forced her brother to either be a nurse or the parent bringing in dolls to be bandaged. Come to think of it, it now makes sense why she wanted to care for kids too.
"I chose pediatrics because, at least for me, it was the one place in medicine where I felt I could truly change a person's life and I could do that simply by educating their parents," Dr. Peak said. "Plus kids are truly amazing! They have a natural empathy that I identify with. The best parts of my job are the hugs, high fives, giggles and eye rolls ... plus an unlimited supply of Dum Dums."
Eye rolls? Yes. Dr. Peak has the type of humor that inspires eye rolls from her family. She calls her husband, Jay, "an amazing man whose selfless dedication to our family inspires me every day. She says her stepson Sage is a constant source of hilarity and keeps her and her husband, Jay, on their toes.
"It's easy to identify with kids ... especially when in your heart you still are one," Dr. Peak said. "The secret is putting yourself in their place. Remembering how big and scary and wonderful and mysterious the world seemed when you were little."
A B.A. in English and Psychology from Baylor University helped Dr. Peak communicate with the children she treats today. From there, she followed her passion and attended medical school at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Her Pediatric Residency was at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock where she participated in Angel One emergency helicopter transport service and where she received the Jocelyn Elders Award for excellence in community service. She returned to her home town of Dallas in 1998 and established a Pediatric Practice in Carrollton, Texas. She joined Cook Children's Physician Network in Lewisville in 2004.
Dr. Peak enjoys gardening, yoga, and boating and in her spare time can be found at the lake with Jay, Sage and the world's most amazing Labs, Sugar Mae and Ceasar.
Lizy Varughese, M.D.
Dr.Varughese received her B.S in Biomedical Sciences from Texas A&M University and M.D from the University of Texas in Houston. She then went on to complete a residency program in Long Island, New York and was appointed as clinical professor of pediatrics at Stony Brook University Hospital teaching and supervising medical students and residents. After that, she was in private practice in Northern New Jersey for 5 years. She moved back to her hometown of Dallas, TX and joined Cook Children's Physician Network in Lewisville in 2013.
She is married to Dr. Shane Varughese and has two children, Noah and Sarah who are the joy of her life. Dr. Varughese enjoys photography, cooking, and church activities. "Dr.Varughese is a great pediatrician. She is very kind and personable. My children love coming to see her. Dr.Varughese makes them feel comfortable, She as well makes me feel very confident as a mom in the health decisions I make for my 5 children." Cathy Brazzell
