Cook Children’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine department welcomes our new certified athletic trainer, Savana Turner, to the team.
Athletic trainers are often found in high schools, colleges and professional sports teams to provide injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, first aid, taping and bracing to student athletes. Athletic trainers are also trained in emergency care, CPR and AED use. Savana sees patients in the clinic for things such as ankle sprains, shoulder pain, injury prevention and home exercise programs. She also works with patients who have orthopedic or overuse injuries, who may not need to see an orthopedic surgeon but require more one-on-one care. This is a great resource for our pediatricians who may not be sure if an athletic injury needs physical therapy, an orthopedic surgeon or attention from our athletic trainer.
Additionally, our athletic trainer is working closely between our orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, pediatricians and urgent care centers to provide improved communication between departments and better care for our patients. Our athletic trainer is also available nights and weekends as a service for parents to triage injuries and assist them in getting their child the appropriate medical care they need. Savana is also partnering with Game On and Parker County Baseball and Softball Academy to provide free injury clinics. At these clinics, children receive a free injury evaluation and prevention tips and Savana can help parents determine if their child needs further care from an orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist, and walk them through the process.
This is a great new resource for our patients and referring physicians. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Savana Turner at 682-303-8070. You can also directly refer patients to Savana by typing “Athletic Trainer” into the orders bar in Epic.
