Why choose Cook Children’s Developmental Pediatrics?
Our developmental pediatricians care for kids with physical, emotional, social and intellectual delays. We're experts at assessing challenging and often overlapping symptoms. Once we understand your child's unique challenges, we oversee their care and help them with the services they need to thrive.
What you can expect
Developmental Pediatrics is part of the Jane and John Justin Institute for Mind Health. Along with neuroscience and behavioral health specialists, we provide streamlined care under one roof.
As a leading developmental pediatrics program, we offer:
Developmental pediatricians have years of training in the issues that can occur as children grow. Our team also includes nurse practitioners who specialize in child development.
We work with kids up to age 21 and get to know families well. As your child grows and their needs change, our caring team is by your side to guide their care.
We're the only local program associated with a school for kids with developmental disabilities. Our renowned Child Study Center provides high-quality education and applied behavioral analysis therapy.

Treatments and services
We're all in for our patients, providing care that transforms the lives of children and families across the region. Services we offer include:
Developmental pediatricians evaluate children ages 18 months to 16 years. Evaluations may take more than one visit to collect and review all the vital information. Your child's evaluation may include:
- Interview to review your child's medical and family history and discuss any behavioral and developmental problems
- Physical and neurological examination
- Diagnostic tests, such as blood, imaging and genetic tests
- Review of school records and evaluations
We always recommend potential next steps after an evaluation, which may include ongoing care through our program. Or, we may recommend a more detailed evaluation by our developmental psychologists. Sometimes, we may suggest other programs or services that might be better for your child.
If appropriate, we will design a care plan tailored to your child's needs. That plan may include:
- Advice on school services that could help your child
- Prescriptions and medication management
- Referrals for therapies available at Cook Children’s or outside groups
We provide routine follow-up care for your child as long as they need us, up to age 21. We also share information with other members of your child's care team. This partnership helps ensure our treatments are in line with your child's overall care.
Before children turn 18, we talk to parents about legal guardianship. Many children we care for have limited abilities. Legal guardianship designates who can make decisions for them as they become adults. It also details whether they do certain things, such as vote or drive a car.
We understand that legal guardianship is a complex process, and we're here to help you complete the paperwork based on what's best for your child and family.
