Why choose Cook Children's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)?
PM&R focuses on improving quality of life and function in children with lifelong disabling conditions. We do that by prescribing rehabilitation therapy, adaptive equipment and bracing devices (orthotics).
Our process involves building a care plan with your input — after all, you know your child best. The goal of the care plan is to improve your child's abilities. We also teach you treatments you can do at home. This family-centered approach leads to better outcomes and well-being for your entire family.
What you can expect
PM&R is part of the Jane and John Justin Institute for Mind Health. The Justin Institute houses neurosciences, behavioral and developmental specialties under one roof.
We've earned a reputation for exceptional, kid-friendly care. That includes incorporating the latest therapies into your child's treatment whenever possible. When you come to us for care, you'll find:
Every child and family gets a treatment plan specific to their needs, abilities and preferences. We're here to guide you through the care your child needs now and to anticipate problems that might develop later. At every step, we want you to know what we're doing and why.
We work closely with other Cook Children's specialists to manage your child's care. In some cases, you may be able to see multiple doctors in a single visit.
Physical, occupational and speech therapy are essential for many kids we see. These services are available at several Cook Children's locations. You're also free to choose another therapy provider.
We then work with medical device and insurance companies to place the order. Some devices we prescribe include braces, walkers and wheelchairs. We also help you obtain equipment for bathing, sleeping and transporting your child.
Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a common medical treatment. In PM&R, we use Botox injections to loosen tight muscles. We know injections can be stressful for kids and parents. Our specialists have techniques to make your child more comfortable.
