Why choose Cook Children’s for Child and Adolescent Psychology?
At Cook Children's, our specially trained psychology team understands the issues and behavioral health concerns that affect kids. Our specialists are licensed and trained in child and/or adolescent psychology, providing support, therapy and diagnostic testing to children, and behavioral consulting to their families.
The child psychology team also provides psychological testing and therapy at clinics across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. We work closely with psychiatrists who prescribe and manage mental health medications. Our goal is to make life easier for the whole family.
What you can expect
Therapy involves personal conversations about your child and family. It's important to have a therapist you like and trust. At Cook Children's, you'll find:
Our team includes child psychologists with doctoral degrees and licensed therapists with master’s degrees. They have the training and commitment to fully explore your child’s unique circumstances and help the entire family overcome any challenges.
Often mental health problems can affect children with other medical conditions. That's why we collaborate with specialists at the Jane and John Justin Institute for Mind Health and all across Cook Children's. This combined approach helps heal kids' minds and bodies.
Our therapists offer many kinds of therapy, each designed to address certain issues. Some therapists are trained in specific methods. We choose a therapist who can provide the most appropriate treatment based on your child's needs.
Your specialized care team
Our experienced psychologists, social workers and nurses understand the wide-reaching impact of a behavioral disorder, or emotional problems and we will give your child and family all of the tools you need to manage your unique situation.
Advancing psychology care
We're continually looking for new ways to meet the needs of our patients. This effort includes ongoing training for our therapists to expand our offerings.
Treatments we offer
After psychological testing, your therapist meets with you and your child to discuss the results and develop a personalized treatment plan. We plan therapy sessions, usually for once a week or as needed. We typically structure therapy around specific goals that kids work on between sessions.
We may work with your family or focus solely on your child. If therapy is with your child alone, we'll check in with you before or after the session. This communication helps ensure we're all working together in the same direction.
Psychological testing helps us better understand your child’s development and plan treatment. Based on your child’s needs, age and maturity level, testing may involve interviews, tests and questionnaires. The evaluation may look at your child’s:
- Behavior
- Learning and intelligence
- Memory and attention
- Social and personality development
Your observations, concerns and hopes for treatment are also valuable to the assessment. We meet with you to discuss your child, their strengths and weaknesses and areas of concern. We may also send a questionnaire to teachers to learn more about your child’s school experience.
There are many types of psychological therapy. Those we offer have a proven track record of success. We may use more than one type of therapy in a single session.
Types of therapy we offer include:
- Behavior modification
- Child-parent relationship therapy (CPRT)
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Collaborative problem solving (CPS)
- Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EDMR)
- Grief counseling
