Sports Program Educational Resources
The Sports Physical Therapy program at Cook Children's offers educational material for parents, coaches, trainers and nurses for sport-specific injuries.
Our team of experts have specialized training in pediatrics and collaborate together to share their knowledge in growing bodies and dynamic training principles. You'll find a wealth of information on how to care for an injury, and tips on how to prevent them from happening in the first place.
Sports injury information
Many sport injuries are caused by stress from overuse and from strains or inflammation around tendon insertions. Cook Children's has created specific guides for injuries we commonly see in the North Texas region.
-
Shoulder dislocation
A dislocation injury occurs when the ball is forced out of the socket. -
Shoulder instability/subluxation
Instability/subluxation occurs when the ball does not move properly against the socket. -
Rotator cuff injury of the shoulder
A result of traumatic injury, overuse, incorrect movement patterns involving the arm.
-
Back muscle strain
A strain typically occurs when a muscle is placed in a stretched position and then contracted forcefully in the opposite direction. -
Braces for scoliosis
Braces are primarily used for treating spinal curves that are more than 25 degrees. -
Idiopathic scoliosis
Scoliosis is a curve of the spine measuring more than 10 degrees. -
Spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis
Spondylolysis in athletes is typically an overuse stress reaction on the bone.
-
Adductor/groin strain
Usually the result of vigorous directional changes while running, sprinting or jumping. -
Hamstring strain
Happens during intense running/sprinting/jumping. -
Hip flexor strain
Hip flexor strains can happen during vigorous sprinting and kicking activities. -
The importance of proper leg alignment
The ACL ligament becomes injured or torn when it is stretched beyond its normal range of movement. -
Quadricep strain
Quadricep strains can happen during vigorous running, sprinting, jumping and kicking activities.
-
Anterior knee pain
Pain around the front part of the knee. -
Chondromalacia patella
Softening of the cartilage underneath the kneecap. -
Fat pad impingement/irritation
Swelling from repetitive tissue pinching. -
Gastrocnemius/soleus strain
From intense running/sprinting/jumping/heel raises. -
Hamstring strain
Strains from intense running, sprinting/jumping. -
Quadricep strain
Happens during intense running/sprinting/jumping/kicking.
-
Ankle sprains
Overstretching the ligaments during a traumatic fall or twisting the ankle can cause a sprain. -
Gastrocnemius/soleus strain
From intense running/sprinting/jumping/heel raises. -
The importance of proper leg alignment
The ACL ligament becomes injured or torn when it is stretched beyond its normal range of movement. -
Sever's disease
Sever's disease is an overuse syndrome found in child/adolescent athletes. -
Shin splints
A pain response between the knee and ankle on the inside of the tibia.
