Meet Dr. Paul L. Van de Vyver
I grew up in a Medical family. Mom was an R.N. and Dad was a physician anesthesiologist. They met while he was in his residency.
I caught the "doctor bug" while working as an orderly in the OR during a summer break. I attended Texas A&M University for a BA in Chemistry, and UT Southwestern for medical school. Initially, I thought that I wanted to be a surgeon, but, in my first month of internship, I knew that there had to be something else for me. My last rotation was in anesthesiology and I knew that I had found my place!
As I continued on in my anesthesiology residency, I was especially drawn to the pediatric anesthesiology portion. The kids were great and the medicine and the care demanded attention to detail. The addition of interaction with families and with having children who needed repeat care added a deeper personal dimension to the anesthetic care than with typical adult practices.
I've been at Cook Children's Medical Center for more than 20 years. I love working with the kids, who demonstrate resilience in times of stress and just go about being a kid. Very inspirational!
Outside of work, I enjoy experiencing the arts and the artists who create the works. I like to sing, have dabbled in painting and I am rusty at the piano - but still enjoy playing.
