Meet Dr. Pamela J. Sherman
For Dr. Sherman, the opportunity to help people gain or return to independence with use of their hands and upper extremities is extremely rewarding. She believes, "Orthopedics is a field focused on improved motion and function. The ability to help children specifically is a real privilege. Kids are so resilient and even the simplest improvements in kids with the greatest challenges can make dramatic differences in their lives."
Dr. Sherman came to Cook Children's to help with hand/upper extremity cases. Prior to that, she had treated both children and adults, but when presented with the opportunity to focus on just children in the multispecialty environment at Cook Children's, she says, "I couldn't pass it up. The comradery within our orthopedic department and with other departments is very special, and a rewarding part of my work day."
During her residency and early career in New York, she cared for many international patients. Today, Dr. Sherman is one of the leading physicians of the orthopedic surgery program here at Cook Children's and she has gained international recognition for her expertise in pediatric care. "It's much more difficult to make medical decisions, especially those involving surgery, for your child as opposed to yourself. My goal is to help educate and guide families in their treatment path, especially when often there is not a right answer or one direction."
For Dr. Sherman, caring for children is a privilege. She works hard to help families find the patience and understanding needed for the challenges they face when they are seeking orthopedic care.
As a mom, Dr. Sherman enjoys being with her three very busy teenagers. She serves as team mom for some of their sports teams. She also wakes early most days to run. "It's a great way to start the day, and I enjoy some runs alone but also those shared with fellow runners with whom I workout," says Dr. Sherman.
Dr. Sherman loves to travel and explore with her family and she belongs to a travel club which she says is a great opportunity to learn and share information throughout the year.
This is a great community event for us and for Fort Worth to support our patients and for our patients to feel empowered. A lot of these patients have started with us as babies. Rock climbing really is a way for them to feel empowered and for them to see that it's different but it still works.

I would like to recognize the woman at the front desk & check out counter. She had a fun "forky" stuffed animal at her desk. I cannot express enough how warm, funny, and kind she was but even more so, I LOVED that she required my daughter to participate in the check in/out process - having my 7 year old advocate for herself as a patient and work on being able to share her own name, DOB, etc. This grants her autonomy and allows her to be seen as a person, not just a patient. I was so grateful for this experience! Dr sherman was also outstanding - her knowledge and ability to communicate in a way that way consumable for me as a mom was so impressive. Similarly, I love that she made attempts to really connect and talk to my daughter.

Endowed Chair Recipient
Research: The Center for Motion Analysis (CMA)
Dr. Sherman will establish an upper extremity motion analysis laboratory using the Cook Children's Gait Lab to evaluate patients, guide and predict responses to treatment, and develop new techniques. The CMA will provide analyses for pediatric patients with neuromuscular, orthopedic, and other impairments, enhancing awareness and improving functional outcomes. It will identify movement patterns difficult for clinicians to detect, assisting with surgical planning, non-surgical treatments, and overall function improvement.
