Meet Dr. Chioma Okammor

Every child has a story, and one of the most rewarding aspects of pediatrics is having the opportunity to support families through each stage of growth and development. Hi, I'm Dr. Chioma Okammor, affectionately called Dr. O by my patients!

My interest in people and how they grow began at a young age. As a child, I was fascinated by people, cultures, history and human development, and I dreamed of becoming an anthropologist. I even used my own money to subscribe to National Geographic magazine when I was 10 years old. While my career path ultimately took a different direction, my interest in understanding and helping people remained the same and naturally led me to medicine.

During my medical training, I cared for many adult patients whose health challenges could have been prevented or improved through earlier intervention. Those experiences inspired me to pursue pediatrics, where I could help children establish healthy habits, identify concerns early, and build a strong foundation for lifelong health.

As a pediatrician, I love the opportunity to build lasting relationships with families. Children have an honesty and perspective that make every day rewarding. Over the years, I have had the privilege of caring for patients from infancy into adulthood, and some now bring their own children to see me. I especially value taking the time to listen to children and their families, understanding their concerns, and helping them find answers when previous attempts have left them feeling unheard.

I earned my medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed my pediatric residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch. I am board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and have more than 20 years of experience caring for children and adolescents. Outside of medicine, I enjoy traveling, reading, music and sports. I especially enjoy watching both college and professional volleyball and cheering on the teams my daughters have played on over the years. I have been married since 1999 and am the proud mother of two adult daughters. I also enjoy mentoring students interested in healthcare careers and participating in community outreach both locally and abroad.
