Meet Dr. Lynnette Leffall
Dr. Lynnette Leffall was born and raised in Dallas, Texas in the Oak Cliff area. Her first career pursuit before the age of 9 was aspiring to become an abstract artist, actually. She was highly supported by her parents and family. They purchased easels, canvas, water colors, oil paints, acrylic paints, pastel pencils, you name it, she had it. Dr. Leffall read about famous artists, such as, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Frida Kahlo, but felt that there was something more than art she needed to pursue because she also equally loved math and science. The shift to science and medicine came when she started to compete in school and district wide science fairs and won in the top three almost every year. Dr. Leffall's connectedness to infants and children came when it was the birth of her first younger cousin, which happened at the age of nine. Prior to that, she was the baby of the family, so didn't have much interaction with smaller children on a regular basis. At age nine, she combined her fascination of science/medicine with children and started her path to becoming a general pediatrician.
Dr. Leffall made sure to attend High School of Health Professions at Townview Magnet Center to jumpstart this pursuit. She started volunteering at Parkland Hospital her freshman year, shadowed local pediatricians, joined health professional clubs, such as Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and even became a certified emergency medical technician (EMT) before she graduated from high school.
After attending college, graduate school, and medical school she spent three years at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA where she completed her pediatric residency training. During those three years in Baton Rouge, she took part in annual visits to local pre-k, elementary, and high schools in predominantly lower socioeconomic areas teaching children and adolescents about the importance of physical and mental health, fitness, hygiene, clean eating, and what a day in a doctor's office details. Given the large proportion of obesity in southern states she started to become passionate about helping with obesity prevention. Dr. Leffall received CME in special obesity training called TeamUP and also received a grant from American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Chop Chop to present the Eatable Alphabet project to small children age 5 and under. This project was geared towards obesity prevention by teaching the very young on the importance of having heathy eating habits and increasing fruits and vegetables in the daily diet. Dr. Leffall also participated in a QI obesity project during residency, where she actually saw positive trends in BMI reduction when they implemented a close follow up system in her pediatric academic clinic compared to no consistent system. It is her goal to continue these efforts of obesity prevention and reduction in her patients as well as take part in community initiatives.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Leffall is very social and extroverted. She is an avid world traveler. She actually spent one month in Kenya and 2 weeks in Peru for global health initiatives. She also considers herself a foodie, so she is always down to try new eateries around the metroplex as well as takes pride in cooking. Some of her other hobbies include, styling hair, hiking, attending sporting events, festivals, concerts, zip lining, and arcade games. If she isn't out and about, then she is likely spending quality time with her family, friends, and favorite morkie.
Dr. Leffall is so excited and committed to taking care of the many beautiful children of the DFW metroplex.
