Meet Dr. Ogochukwu Okoye
Dr. Okoye was born in Nigeria and has fond memories of spending her early childhood exploring and playing outside under the warm tropics sun. Around that time, she and her family immigrated to the United States, and she found herself in a new environment. Learning to navigate a new culture and way of life taught her resilience and adaptability, skills that have become her strengths.
She has always been interested in science and has known since high school she wanted to be a physician. It was not until her clinical years at Indiana University School of Medicine that she knew Pediatrics was her specialty of choice. During her Pediatrics clerkship, Dr. Okoye realized she looked forward to seeing the newborns in the nursery and helping manage complex diseases in Nephrology. She left each day with a deep sense of fulfillment; she was hooked, and she loved it!
Dr. Okoye completed her Pediatrics residency training at Virginia Tech Carilion. She also holds a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Cook Children's, she worked as a hospitalist and outpatient physician in North Carolina.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and family. She also works out regularly and enjoys reading. During college football season, Dr. Okoye periodically checks the scores and supports the University of Notre Dame, her alma mater.
If Dr. Okoye could sum up her experience in medicine thus far, it is beautifully captured in this quote by Louis Pasteur, French chemist and microbiologist, "When I approach a child, he inspires in me two sentiments - tenderness for what he is and respect for what he may become." When Dr. Okoye is examining a baby, she often wonders to herself, "Who will this child become, a scientist, an attorney, an artist, a physician, or perhaps an athlete?" She finds child development intriguing and fascinating, and considers it an honor and a calling to care for and help guide children to optimal health and well-being.
