Knowing every child's life is sacred, we promise to improve the well-being of every child in our care and our communities. To keep that commitment we provide the most advanced technology and treatments available. The Jane and John Justin Neurosciences Center at Cook Children's is recognized for its dedication in bringing extraordinary technologies and treatments to our patients.
A lifetime commitment
In the hands of our very skilled specialists, groundbreaking advancements such as laser ablation surgery or deep brain stimulation deliver pinpoint precision and reduced risk in brain surgeries. At Cook Children's we continually seek to provide extraordinary care and better results–like going home seizure free only one day after brain surgery–and that's the best kind of advancement of all.
The right diagnosis. The right treatment.
Our Neurodiagnostics Center is among the best in nation, and one of only a few pediatric centers to offer MEG technology. MEG, or magnetoencephalography, makes it possible for our specialists to see the electrical activity in your child's brain with pinpoint accuracy. MEG is safe, noninvasive and an amazing tool for helping our specialists map out not only your child's brain, but a treatment plan that will get your child on the road to recovery.
We also combine MEG results with other advanced imaging to create a 3-D model of your child's brain. 3-D modeling is particularly advantageous for your child's neurology team when determining the need for brain surgery because it lets the team see with razor sharp accuracy where tumors, lesions or stroke centers are before ever going into the operating room.

Laser ablation surgery
Cook Children's ushers in a whole new era in neurosurgery with the introduction of laser ablation surgery to North Texas. This minimally invasive neurosurgery uses smarter technology for more precise removal of lesions and tumors in a child's brain while at the same time reducing risk.
Stereotactic laser ablation is an iMRI-guided, minimally invasive procedure that allows abnormal tissue to be thermally destroyed in real time. Surgery takes place in an iMRI suite so that doctors can see the tumor or lesion and remove all of it in a single surgery. Most patients go home within 24 hours and with only one stitch. Pediatric deep brain stimulation
Not only is Cook Children's the first independent pediatric hospital in the United States, and the only children's hospital in Texas to offer DBS for children, our neurology specialists are also actively researching and pursuing additional uses for this very advanced treatment.
While DBS is currently used to treat children with physiological and movement disorders such as essential tremor and dystonia, the possibilities that DBS opens up are many. Our doctors are actively involved in investigating the expansion of DBS to treat epilepsy, Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression in children, teens and young adults. All with the goal of improving the quality of life for every child we treat. Learn more about Cook Children's DBS surgery here.
