Ami Waggoner

Hi! I'm Ami, and my son, Luke, was diagnosed with generalized epilepsy at 5, then Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome at 11. Now 17, Luke's life has been deeply shaped by Cook Children's. He's endured extensive hospital stays and treatments for his seizures, including a vagus nerve stimulator implant and 16 months of intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. Notably, in 2021, he was among the first pediatric patients nationwide to receive a deep brain stimulator for generalized epilepsy. Luke has undergone countless tests. He also manages eosinophilic esophagitis and other health issues, all with Cook Children's support. Despite daily seizures and multiple medications, we embrace joy in every moment, living by our family motto: "celebrate the struggle." We're committed to supporting Cook Children's by volunteering and fostering a community to help families on this tough journey. Through all the highs and lows, Cook Children's and their amazing staff have been our unwavering guides. We know we're a vital part of the team as Luke bravely battles epilepsy. While a life-changing diagnosis can be terrifying, we're here to remind you that you're not alone!
