A Legacy of Healing
In December 2024, James "Jim" Cunningham, M.D. retired after a decades-long, remarkable career at Cook Children's. He joined the Cook Children's family in 1987 serving as director of Pulmonology. Eventually he became chief medical officer (CMO) and then stepped into the role of executive vice president/CMO. Throughout his career, Dr. Cunningham's kind and caring nature has shone through his work, helping every child feel understood and cared for.
Dr. Cunningham was initially drawn to pulmonology because it provided a unique opportunity to treat acute illnesses while also helping kids manage long-term conditions like cystic fibrosis. His research led to innovative treatments and groundbreaking discoveries, while providing advanced care and creating a compassionate atmosphere for each child and family.
Playing a key role in modernizing Cook Children's, Dr. Cunningham was instrumental in adding cutting-edge technologies and expanding our services. His leadership and commitment to excellence made our hospital a leader in pediatric health care.
Dr. Cunningham has handed the baton to Jonathan Nedrelow, M.D. As the new chief medical officer, Dr. Nedrelow will carry on the commitment to pediatric care that Dr. Cunningham championed. We thank Dr. Cunningham for his many contributions and celebrate the lasting impact he has made on our Cook Children's family. It's quite a legacy!
