Meet Dr. Timothy McCavit
Timothy L. McCavit, M.D., M.S.C.S., is a hematology/oncology physician with Cook Children's Medical Center, in Ft. Worth, Texas. He received a B.S. in molecular biology from Texas Tech University in 1998 and an M.D. from UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2002. He completed post-graduate medical training at UT Southwestern in 2009 (residency and fellowship) and an M.S. in Clinical Sciences from UT Southwestern in 2013.
Dr. McCavit has diverse interests in benign hematology. His chief focus is on the care of children with bleeding disorders as he directs the Bleeding Disorder Program and Hemophilia Treatment Center at Cook Children's. In addition to caring for children with complex bleeding disorders, Dr. McCavit has an interest and expertise in the care of children with hemoglobinopathy including sickle cell disease and thalassemia. He has a specific interest and expertise in the care of children with iron deficiency anemia – particularly refractory or difficult-to-treat cases. He is forward-thinking with the use of intravenous iron for children with refractory iron deficiency anemia.
Dr. McCavit has been active in the American Society of Hematology where he served on the Quality Committee from 2011 – 2017. He has published research investigating quality-of-care indicators for children with both sickle cell disease and cancer (febrile neutropenia). Further, he has published research in sickle cell disease and iron deficiency anemia including a landmark paper comparing to commonly used forms of oral iron for iron deficiency anemia published in JAMA in June 2017.
Dr. Timothy Lee McCavit was very thorough, friendly, knowledgeable, and explained it to us in a way we could understand. We appreciate him and his demeanor. He made the visit feel like a success. – Patient family
