Custom Earplugs for Swimming and Noise Protection
For kids who are prone to ear infections, swimming, showers and other water activities can result in chronic ear infections. This can lead to hearing loss. Children with sensitive hearing may also experience hearing loss when exposed to loud noises.
The good news is, custom earplugs can protect their hearing.
Why custom earplugs?
Custom earplugs are fitted to your child's specific ear canal. The perfect fit offers an extra measure of protection and comfort, while making the earplugs less likely to fall out.
At Cook Children's, our pediatric audiologists can make impressions of any child's ear and can then provide custom fit earplugs for their small ears.
Musician plugs
Did you know the sound of music could impact your child's hearing? Musicians who play instruments for long periods of time, such as band students, should wear hearing protection. Percussion players should always wear earplugs, whether they're inside or outside. Research shows violin players also are more at risk for hearing loss due to the instrument's closeness to the ear.
Created specifically with music in mind, musician earplugs are designed to deliver balanced sound reduction while preserving the richness of music. They include specific attenuating filters for specific listening needs. Your audiologist can help you choose from 9dB, 15dB, or 25dB attenuation filters.
Swim plugs
Custom swim plugs can create a watertight seal to help keep water out of a child's ears. Swim plugs may be recommended by your child's doctor to keep the ear canal dry, reduce infection after ear tube placement or following other ear surgeries.
These plugs are useful for children susceptible to swimmer's ear, or who simply do not like the feel of water in their ear canals. Doctors suggest custom plugs while swimming in murkier waters, like rivers, lakes and ponds. Swim plugs are available in a variety of fun colors with connecting cords, and they even float so they are easy to find.
Shooter plugs
Did you know that just a single brief exposure to a high noise level such as with shooting can permanently damage hearing in one or both ears? It doesn't matter the type of gun or the distance, or whether you're the shooter or you're just near the shooter.
Shooter plugs allow for clear communication until sounds reach dangerous levels. Upon high noise level events, a pressure released valve or an electronic circuit instantly suppresses the loud noise to protect hearing. Shooter plugs can be custom made or a universal fit.
