Vestibular Rehabilitation

At Cook Children's, we know that children are not small adults. Diagnosing and treating vestibular disorders in children and teens requires special skills.

What is a vestibular disorder?

The vestibular system is located in the inner ear. The system sends signals to the brain that control balance and eye coordination. There are many possible causes of vestibular disorders in kids and teens, such as viral or bacterial infections, congenital defects, a tumor or even chemicals and drugs. A head injury or concussion may also cause a vestibular disorder. The symptoms may include dizziness, difficulty with balance or coordination and difficulty controlling eye movements.

At Cook Children's, our vestibular team is comprised of audiologists, physical therapists and occupational therapists. Our focus is 100 percent on kids and teens. Because kids and teens are still growing, the types of injuries they incur and the therapy they require is very different from adults.
