Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
At Cook Children's, we help children and teens with scoliosis, which is when the spine curves in an unusual way. Scoliosis can affect how a person stands, moves or feels. Our physical therapists (PT) have specialized advanced training in treating scoliosis. We will create an individual treatment plan for each person's needs, with the focus on helping patients move better, feel more comfortable and to keep the curve from getting worse. We also teach our patients and their families about scoliosis so they can understand and manage it better. Our goal is to help everyone live their best life! Our treatment focuses on:
- Correcting posture
- Having less pain
- Improving function and activities
- Improving self-image and self-esteem
Treatment
Our therapists will perform an individualized evaluation, and then design a program of patient-specific exercises, breathing techniques and stretches, for your child. Most patients are seen twice a week for 6-8 weeks, with follow-up appointments for exercise progression, one time per month for 4 months. Each treatment plan is designed to your child's diagnosis and specific needs.
