Equipment Clinic
Specialized medical equipment can help improve your child’s function, independence and your peace of mind as a caregiver. Cook Children’s Rehabilitation Services collaborates with Assistive Technology Providers (ATP) in our Equipment clinic to find the most appropriate equipment for your child and submit for insurance coverage. We will discuss your concerns, assess your child and work together to determine the best options for your family.
We frequently order the following types of equipment:
- Manual, power and power-assist wheelchairs
- Custom molded and off the shelf seating for wheelchairs
- Adaptive strollers
- Bath, shower, toilet chairs and transfer systems
- Standers
- Special needs car seats
- Gait trainers and walkers
- Medical beds
- Hoyer lifts
The therapist and ATP can make recommendations for other companies that provide home and vehicle modifications.
What to expect during your clinic visit?
Your equipment evaluation can take up to two hours, depending on your child’s equipment needs. The evaluating therapist, your physician and the durable medical equipment (DME) company will submit the paperwork to your child’s insurance for approval. Once the equipment is approved, it will be ordered and delivered in the clinic or at your home. It can take three to six months to get your equipment. This varies based on your insurance and the equipment being ordered.
What should I bring to the clinic?
Please bring your current wheelchair or adaptive stroller to the clinic with you. If you have another piece of equipment such as a stander or gait trainer that needs to be replaced, please bring a picture of the equipment and serial number sticker.
When and where is the clinic held?
The Equipment Clinic is scheduled five times per month with options to schedule at our Fort Worth, Hurst and Mansfield clinic locations. Equipment clinic referrals can be faxed to 682-885-7590. You can request a specific vendor when your visit is scheduled. If your child is receiving outpatient or home health physical or occupational therapy services, please inform us when scheduling. Depending on your insurance, you may need to work with your treating therapist for your equipment needs.
What if my equipment needs to be repaired or adjusted?
Contact your DME provider first. They can send a technician to your home to fix the equipment and order new parts. If your child has outgrown their equipment or their needs have changed, you can request an Equipment clinic referral from your physician.
