Endowed Chair: Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy for Pediatric Gastrointestinal Endoscopy led by Clifton Huang, M.D.
Cook Children's has awarded Clifton Huang, M.D., an Endowed Chair to create a Center of Excellence in Advanced Endoscopy and Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (CLE), and put Cook Children's at the forefront of live gastrointestinal endoscopic diagnosis, therapeutics and molecular imaging. This will enhance the management of multiple acute and chronic gastrointestinal disorders in an expedient and more precise way. The ultimate goal is to develop live diagnostic criteria using CLE technology that can be validated with conventional histology for mutiple gastrointestinal conditions. Immunosuppression therapy is frequently used for treating moderate to severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). However, it carries significant risks and high treatment failure. Over 50% of patients will have either primary or secondary therapy failure within the first year. CLE will be a ground-breaking approach pioneering new endoscopic criteria to diagnose IBD, evaluate remission, and guide personalized treatment. This could result in reducing loss of response to under 15%, transforming IBD care. Simultaneously, the restructured IBD program aspires to establish Cook Children's as a benchmark institution, increasing steroid-free remission rates above 85%, surpassing the national average of 82% from the current 70%. These initiatives will position Cook Children's as a leader in the precise and effective management of IBD.

Meet Dr. Huang
Dr. Huang is passionate about helping children with IBD find relief for their chronic gastric conditions, so they can get back to being kids.
