Pediatric Intensive Care
Knowing that every child's life is sacred, it is the promise of Cook Children's to improve the health of every child in our region through the prevention and treatment of illness, disease and injury. Cook Children's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) believes that all children deserve the best, evidence-based treatment strategies available to manage their illnesses and achieve good health. The PICU at Cook Children's cares for infants and children with all types of critical and/or life-threatening medical and surgical conditions which require 24-hour care and monitoring. Patients include those who have suffered traumatic injuries such as broken bones and head injuries; those with respiratory illnesses, post-surgery patients, kidney transplant patients, heart surgery and cancer patients; and those with chronic diseases. Through participation in clinical trials, the providers in the PICU department are making great strides in improving the outcomes and quality of life of the young patients they serve. Areas of research interest include sedation, infection control, and pain management studies.
